Lennon Lacy's life matters, as do the lives of the victims of lynching who were often brutalized out of their humanity.  Their lives matter. We've made a film with People of Color in it\" as opposed to \"I just feel like People of Color should be in every genre.\"\u003C\/blockquote\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cb\u003EOn the difficulty she had getting \"Beyond the Lights\" made\u003C\/b\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cblockquote class=\"tr_bq\"\u003EIt is tough. It tells us that things have not changed in 14 years. With \u003Ci\u003ELove and Basketball\u003C\/i\u003E every studio turned it down. And with this film I felt like I had written a contemporary love story and a music film that was touching on contemporary themes and thought it would be an easy sell. I was shocked when everybody turned it down...It's disheartening to sit in meeting after meeting and people saying they love my script and they love my work, but they don't see this as a movie they want to do.\u003C\/blockquote\u003E\u003Cb\u003EOn whether she feels discriminated against\u003C\/b\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cblockquote class=\"tr_bq\"\u003EPeople ask me all the time if I feel discriminated against as a Black female director, and I actually don't because I get offered a ton of stuff, and if I wanted to work all the time I could but I like to direct what I've written so I feel what's discriminated against are my choices which is to focus on people of color and specificially women of color. Those are the films that are not getting made and those are the films that take more fight, but I'm up for the fight because if I'm not making them they're not going to get made and we become invisible again.\u003C\/blockquote\u003E\u003Cb\u003EOn why diverse images are so important\u003C\/b\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cblockquote class=\"tr_bq\"\u003EIt's just about putting people of color in every genre and making it become normal. You know when \u003Ci\u003EThe Cosby Show\u003C\/i\u003E came out and everyone was up in arms about \u003Ci\u003EThe Cosby Show\u003C\/i\u003E and that it was reflecting a world that didn't exist, but I knew black doctors and I knew black lawyers and I knew families that had a mother and a father and kids that were well-behaved. So right now there's a perception in the world that black people don't love each other --that they don't get married and it's because we don't see it. There are never any images of that in TV and film. and without those images young black people have nothing to aspire to and the world continues to perpetuate this myth about the lack of black love.\u003C\/blockquote\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Chr \/\u003EKimberly Foster is the founder and editor of For Harriet. In their eyes, I left theater due to my enchantment with theory, higher education, and academia. This is true: I go to work, meet with my students, address student concerns, and head home around 5-ish every day. All of this while they are out auditioning, contacting casting agencies, and and taking classes to continue honing their craft.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Ca name='more'\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThey often remind me of an implicit message that keeps showing up in their lifestyle: “You’re only as good as your next gig.” For them, Tyler Perry offers that “next gig.” I can understand that, on a personal level. Prior to coming into higher education student affairs, I looked for work in the theatre. Trust me, life is a lot better when you know that your “next gig” is secure. However, there is always a price to be paid. The work of Tyler Perry implicitly asks actresses (specifically) to bend a bit, conform into semblances of mashed-up stereotypes... with a moral \/ motivational message that “justifies” the use of theatrical tropes. And that’s just in the supporting cast. The work of Tyler Perry, as embodied by the character “Madea”, implicitly suggests that Black men can tell our stories for us, guide us when we get “lost”, and consistently save the day. We have already \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2014\/03\/18\/my_surprisingly_frank_phone_call_with_tyler_perry\/\"\u003Eentertained and toiled with the concepts\u003C\/a\u003E. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EMy question is: Why do we keep going to see the films, knowing how problematic they are?\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ELast week, Lionsgate Films released a trailer for Tyler Perry’s first animated film, “Madea’s Tough Love.” The movie is set to be released via DVD on January 20, 2015.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Ciframe allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"352\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/a3gCVxikhqY?rel=0\" width=\"625\"\u003E\u003C\/iframe\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EWhy is Madea having her latest adventure, in the midst of the revolutionary media content currently being created by and featuring Black women—including Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, Being Mary Jane, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, and more? Why do we need another man to tell Black women’s stories, when there are Black women currently doing such a good job at it?\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EPerhaps it is because of the employment opportunities Madea films open up for Black actors and actresses. Perhaps those who find Madea problematic are few. Why else would I continuously find myself schlepping across town with a group of girlfriends to see her latest film, gritting my teeth, and quietly protesting about getting my money back? Perhaps we watch these films because when it comes to cinematography featuring Black characters, “we are underfed,” as the movie “Dear White People” suggested in a particularly poignant scene.
