For Nearly five decades, Carrie Mae Weems has produced provocative art work that weaves American History and contemporary debates. Last year she was awarded a MacArthur Foundation Genius Fellowship.
Weems sat down with contemporary artist Mickalene Thomas at the Brooklyn Museum in January of last year to discuss how their work challenges traditional notions of race and gender.
