Bree Newsome: Taking Down Flag Part of 'My Calling as a Freedom Fighter'

Bree Newsome, who climbed up the flagpole at the South Carolina state capitol last week to cut down the Confederate battle flag says she has no regrets. Even if it means serving time, Newsome accepts the risk as "part of [her] calling as a freedom fighter".

Newsome was charged with defacing state property and faces up to three years in prison and/or a fine of up to $5,000 on the misdemeanor offense.

She said she hoped that her actions would draw attention to an unjust situation and to the moral dilemma of flying the battle flag, which she called a symbol of hate and treason.

“It’s a moment for society to do a gut check of our values,” Newsome said.
