Insecure, HBO's new comedy born straight from the mind of Issa Rae, has been renewed for a second season according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The half-hour comedy will return in 2017 with 10 episodes. That's a longer season than it's first 8 episode order.
The show draws an average of 3.2 million viewers an episode.
Rae collaborated with comedian and veteran television writer Larry Wilmore to craft the show's concept. Many of the first season's episodes were directed by Melina Matsoukas, who made her name in music videos.
Rae became known for her viral webseries The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl. From the show's start, Rae has emphasized that she's not trying to represent every Black woman. “This is not the quintessential black-woman experience. It’s a very specific experience.”
Issa Rae's new show Insecure recently debuted on HBO and has received great reviews so far. The 31-year-old stopped by Charlie Rose to discuss the series with the veteran interviewer.
During her sit down she talked about the audiences who won't get into the show because of the race of its protagonists.
"Some people may see this is a show about two Black women and feel like, "I can't relate I'm not going to understand and this isn't for me," she said. "I kind of find that unfair because I am of Curb [Your Enthusiam] and Jewish culture is huge in that, and I still enjoy the show."
Insecure, Issa Rae's long-awaited HBO comedy, will premiere on October 9. In the newly released trailer, watch Issa try to find her way while navigating the last year of her 20s.
Rae collaborates with director Melina Matsoukas (aka the woman who brought "Formation" to life) and executive producer Prentice Penny to create a very specific. She's been adamant that this she is not "trying to tell every black woman’s story," and she doesn't need to. From the first glimpses we've seen, it will give us everything we need.
We've been anxiously awaiting the first look of Issa Rae's new comedy series Insecure. The show will be premiere on HBO this fall.
The show follows ups and downs in the lives of two Black women, Issa Dee and Molly Carter.
The first episode was directed by Melina Matsoukas (a.k.a. the woman behind Beyoncé's "Formation") and Larry Wilmore is a show consultant. Yvonne Orji plays Issa's bestfriend Molly and Jay Ellis co-stars as Lawrence, her visually appealing but unemployed boyfriend.
Issa Rae's The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl made waves in 2011 for telling a kind of story that's not often seen.
She teamed up a deal with multimedia mogul Shonda Rhimes in 2012 to a pilot for another series "I Hate LA Dudes," but the show was not picked up. She released her first book The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girlin 2015.
