NBCBLK, NBC's online space that focuses on the stories, news, and culture of the contemporary Black experience in America, has created a video series titled #blkOUT, which documents the stories and issues of queer and trans Black people today. I'm often asked what it means to be a feminist in 2014. The question is posed by well-meaning men and women who don't quite see how a feminist viewpoint can be reconciled with my diverse interests and goals. While I once got defensive about what felt like an interrogation, I understand that feminism has been so narrowly represented that my questioners are simply asking me to define my own brand of feminism.
