FKA Twig's Self-Directed "Pendulum" Is Breathtaking

Pendulum, noun:1. "A body suspended from a fixed support so that it swings freely back and forth under the influence of gravity, commonly used to regulate various devices, especially clocks." 
2. "Something that swings back and forth from one course, opinion, or condition to another"


The standard definitions for the name of FKA Twig's new song seem fitting for the themes within the lyrics and the music video. Suspended from the air by her hair, she sings of loneliness, being left out and not feeling good enough.
While the lyrics are soul wrenching the video is an attention grabber. FKA literally swings in anticipation to be heard and is held captive by the desire to be seen. Imagery paired with the chorus:

"So lonely trying to be yours

What a forsaken cause

So lonely trying to be yours

When you're looking for so much more"

works to pull listeners in and encourages us to leave the song on repeat. For some, the "Pendulum" may just be a good song, but others find it and the video "groundbreaking".  Critics have noted that FKA has originally been known for her back-up gigs, and is no stranger to being strung up. Before becoming a solo artist FKA Twigs featured as a dancing marionette in Jessie J's "Price Tag," and has since then, been often and mainly associated with that appearance.

Now, though, FKA Twigs is in control. She is no longer forced, through casting to be tied up. Having self-directed the video, it is clear that the bondage is of her own design and may be a sign of surrender and vulnerability. Through her video, viewers get to witness her openly visually and lyrically wish that her  words, effort, and love would get through to the blinded lover.
