Viola Davis Reminded Mainstream America of the Power of Black Beauty Last Night

Viola Davis is a true class act and deserves every bit of recognition, not only for her outstanding talent but also for her dignity.

During the 2015 People’s Choice Awards, the Academy Award nominated actress accepted the honor of “Favorite Actress in a New TV Series” for her role in How to Get Away with Murder. She graced the audience in a beautiful gown that hugged her in all the right places and complimented her rich complexion.

As with any acceptance speech by a celebrity, Viola thanked her fans, husband and Shonda Rhimes for selecting her as the lead of the show. Now this was no ordinary thank you. Viola’s words were tailored gratitude for the naysayers.

Davis said, “Thank you Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers for thinking of a leading lady who looks like my classic beauty”.

Yes, New York Times, that was for you. You may remember, a TV critic from the paper referred to Davis as “less classically beautiful”.

That my friends is the definition of beauty. Rising above the fray and outshining insignificant remarks is a lesson we all can learn a thing or two. Some may call it a dig while I call it a “black girls are here to stay” public service announcement.

And that is how you get away with being Viola Davis.
