Mom Graduates in Place of Her Son Days After He Died In A Car Crash

Katherine Jackson lost her 18-year-old son just days before his high school graduation. Aaron Dunigan was returning home from prom when the car he was riding in crashed into a truck, in what turned out to be a fatal collision, NBC Chicago reported. The high school prom king was killed along with the truck driver. Another student in the car, Mike Crowter, was injured. Upon graduating from Illinois’ Thornton Fractional North High School the quarterback was set to play football at Southern Illinois University this fall.

On the night her son would have graduated, Katherine Jackson, who never graduated herself, put on a cap and gown, walked across the stage, and accepted her son's diploma. Before the tribute to her son, Jackson told NBC Chicago, “I’m going to be his legs and he’s going to be my wings and we’re going to go up there and get our diploma.” Although she lost her son, the loving mother forgives the boy who was driving the car that night. “I want to hold him and let him know that Aaron loves him too,” she said. “It’s nobody’s fault.”
