Crystal Valentine Delivers Powerful Poem Deconstructing the Myth of "Black Privilege"

2015’s New York City Youth Poet Laureate Crystal Valentine evaluates the idea of "black privilege" in a powerful poem performed during finals at the 2015 College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational.

"Black privilege is a myth, a pun, a punch line. It's the time a teacher asks a little boy what he wanted to be when he grew up and he said 'Alive,'" the poet recites in an emotional performance.

As New York City Youth Poet Laureate Crystal will receive a book deal of her poetry to be released in November. Support her writing here.
