Filmmaker Sharon Lewis is Creating the First Caribbean Canadian Sci-Fi Movie

Writer and director Sharon Lewis is working on the first Caribbean-Canadian sci-fi feature film, inspired by Nalo Hopkinson's Brown Girl in the Ring. Lewis is currently raising funds for the project, which was selected by the Canadian Film Centre as part of their exclusive partnership with Indiegogo.

If you’re unfamiliar with Brown Girl in the Ring, here’s the description from Goodreads:

The rich and privileged have fled the city, barricaded it behind roadblocks, and left it to crumble. The inner city has had to rediscover old ways-farming, barter, herb lore. But now the monied need a harvest of bodies, and so they prey upon the helpless of the streets. With nowhere to turn, a young woman must open herself to ancient truths, eternal powers, and the tragic mystery surrounding her mother and grandmother.
She must bargain with gods, and give birth to new legends.
The film is a prequel to the book and will follow Ti-Jeanne as she grows up, defies her grandmother and moves to another city to be with her first love. In a press release for the campaign, Lewis notes, "Nalo’s depiction of Ti-Jeanne, a young caribbean canadian girl and her fantastical world of spirits has haunted me ever since I first read the novel. As with any adaptation I had to hone in on one aspect of the story, so I went to, the beginning of the beginning, the first steps Ti-Jeanne takes towards becoming a hero."
