Lela Whitfield inherited her late mother's reverse mortgage in 2010. She faces eviction from her home, but activists are fighting to keep her there.
Jessica Williams is inarguably one of the best parts about
The Daily Show. And on Monday night's episode, she made us love her even more during her segment on Detroit's water cut-off to low-income residents.
Welfare Rights Activist Maureen Taylor appeared on MSNBC to discuss the city of Detroit's choice to shut off water to thousands of residents who are behind on their bills. When reporter Hank Winchester attempted to paint those who can't pay as irresponsible and lazy, Taylor immediately pushed back and underscored that the water shutoff affects many who are poor and disabled. Taylor ended the interview frustrated: “The next time you invite me to be here, let’s have some truth and a fair exchange as opposed to Hank who doesn’t know what the hell he’s talking about. Gobble up all the time. I’ll talk to you later.”
The exchange serves as a much-needed reminder that we need to take back the narrative.
