25 years ago, Rebecca Lolosoli founded Umoja village as a safe haven for Samburu women in northern Kenya. These women say they had been oppressed by traditional patriarchal practices, including female genital mutilation, for decades.
The Umoja village has empowered women in surrounding areas to start their own matriarchal villages. Broadly visited Umoja and the surrounding matriarchal villages and spoke with the women who live in these villages, as well as the men who approve and disapprove of these matriarchal societies.
