Aisha Tyler Opens Up About Her Painful Public Divorce: "He Didn't Choose This"

Aisha Tyler, 45, announced that she and her husband Jeff Tietjens are divorcing after 20 years of marriage. The two met in college and were together until their separation in January 2015. On Monday’s episode of The Talk, she began to cry as she discussed the media furor her marital strife has caused.

She explained.

My husband and I are separating... that's a very painful thing to go through and it's also a really painful thing to go through in public... I'm sure you can imagine it's pretty frustrating to have people talking about your private life who don't know anything about it and speculating and you know saying lots of crazy stuff but I wanted to say this... my husband and I met when I was a teenager and I've been with him for more than half of my adult life... it's very hard when you love someone very much to also start to realize that maybe you want different things for your lives... I don't, not in any way see this relationship as a failure... We loved each other passionately and we lived life fully and we're trying to let each other go in the kindest way we possibly can... that's what I'm going to say about the relationship and the rest of it is none of your damn business!

"He didn’t choose this life, I chose this life. It’s very unfair to drag someone into this life that doesn’t want any part of it. The only reason they’re here is because they fell in love with someone in the business,” she explained. “He’s a very private person. He’s a very kind-hearted person and I didn’t want to expose him to the kind of stuff I knew was going to come when this happened.”

Earlier this year, Aisha, who does not have children, reiterated that she does not regret her choice to forgo them.
